The Science Behind the Practice of Skin-to-Skin Contact
Recent Findings in the WHO Study
The most important finding in this study was that the strength of the benefits of kangaroo care was enhanced by the length of the baby’s skin-to-skin contact. In fact, the best results were noted with at least 90 minutes of uninterrupted skin-on-skin contact directly after delivery.
This is the first study to show a link between the duration of skin contact and breastfeeding outcomes. It has been conclusively shown that newborn babies exposed to skin-on-skin contact for a minimum of 90 minutes are far more likely to be breastfed successfully. The contact is beneficial to the mother’s ability to lactate and the baby’s ability to latch properly while feeling safe and calm.
Information was gathered from eight different countries and included observations from 1,383 mothers who had just given birth to full-term babies. This included babies born by cesarean section.
